Interview with Style Maven Sasha Maksutenko

Sasha Maksutenko and I met at a mutual friend’s housewarming party, and we instantly clicked over our mutual love of fashion and experience with blogging. Every woman deserves to feel empowered with their own personal style, and Sasha is an expert at making women feel their best with her personalized styling services and vintage jewelry collection. The Sasha Maks Vintage Collection  encompasses the glamour, fantasy and originality of costume jewels of the twentieth century with a focus on Pop and Mod baubles of the 60s and 70s. I am so excited to be interviewing Sasha today on how she started her jewelry business to which celeb’s closet she wouldn’t mind raiding!

Tell me about yourself and your career so far, how did you become a fashion stylist and start your vintage jewelry company?

SM: I’ve been collecting vintage costume jewelry for at least 10 years. I started off as a mid-century design dealer, and began paying attention to jewelry while on the hunt for  vintage treasures. Eventually, I switched to jewelry exclusively and first started selling at trunk shows and then online. I launched my e-boutique Sasha Maks Vintage in 2009 and started my personal style blog in 2013. Styled by Sasha Maks came about later that year and was an outgrowth of my jewelry business. I began styling local designer’s fashion shows and personal styling followed that.

What has been the most rewarding experience thus far in your career?

SM: In terms of jewelry it’s finding amazing creations by designers I admire like Dior, Lanvin, and Paco Rabanne. As far as personal styling it’s the look on my client’s face when they discover how good they can look, the confidence it engenders, and just the pure joy they experience from fashion.
And overall the opportunity to meet other creatives and entrepreneurs and work on fun collabs.

How do you choose what looks work for each individual styling client?

SM: There’s a very thorough questionnaire that my clients fill out followed by a phone consult and often after that, a closet audit. This gives me a deep understanding of what their needs are, the challenges they have with style and fashion, and what they want to accomplish. By choosing pieces that flatter a particular body type and being a thorough editor of what stays in the closet and what needs to be purchased, my clients gain invaluable knowledge they can apply in the future.

What is your favorite Fall 2015 fashion trend?

SM: I like the fact that there are so many diverse trends now, nothing is really dominating. Pick and choose from the decade that appeal to you, the 70s, 80s, and 90s all had a big presence on the catwalk. Conjure up your own idea of dressing.  What speaks to my sensibility is the woman on Gucci’s Fall ‘15 runway by Alessandro Michelle, in first collection for the house, the looks are eclectic, gender-neutral, very vintagy. Which is catnip for me. Since I wear a lot of vintage clothes and like to mix things up. The collection has no overt sexuality, just a very modern approach to style. And the Vetements Fall ‘15 collection is all about reinterpreted basics in skewed proportions and oversized outerwear, tuned into what’s happening on the streets of Paris now.

If you could choose a celebrity closet to shop in, who’s would it be and why?

SM: Ha! I would love that! It would be quite a few.  Here are some who come to mind right now, all women who have an original sense of style.
Caroline de Maigret, French model and music producer – love all the masculine elements in her wardrobe, that only make her more devastatingly feminine.
Charlotte Gainsbourg, French actress and singer (and celebrity royalty in France) – has a very sophisticated edge. And like Caroline de Maigret she obviously styles herself, nothing is forced, her style is authentic and has a spontaneous quality. Maja Wyh, German blogger, has the oversized and layered looks down! Stop it Right Now blogger, Jayne Min, laid back LA tomboy who effortlessly rocks next level statement pieces like they are wardrobe basics.

If you could see any woman wearing your beautiful pieces, who would it be?

SM: Really anyone who falls in love with a piece and has a blast wearing it. If you mean who in the public eye, then why not all the women mentioned above!

Are there any fun projects that you have coming up?

SM: I’m going ahead with a big project. I’m rebranding by bringing together my jewelry and styling websites under one name, Sasha Maks. it will be much easier for me to manage them in one place instead of going back and forth. It’s going to be a lot of work, but I think it will be worth it in the end. So right now, I’m excited about designing a new logo and just giving everything a revamp.

…simply my name…

All Gussied Up is still alive through my blog and YouTube channel & aren’t going anywhere! I’m a little emotional making the switch here but it feels like the right time.

I started All Gussied Up over 10 years ago and have shared wellness, beauty, and style content here since then. And since I’ve begun my journey to become a certified professional life coach, there has been a huge internal shift for me & what I feel called to share.

That means that I will still share all of the above in addition to my personal journey to fulfillment, whatever that looks like (because it’s always evolving!), tools to help you find yours, and just simply how I am inspired to live a beautifully aligned life from the inside out.

so happy you’re here 💋
SLEEPY 😴 GIRL MOCKTAIL 🍹 I had to try the t SLEEPY 😴 GIRL MOCKTAIL 🍹
I had to try the trending mocktail recipe for myself and it WORKS! Plus I love a good cocktail so was down to give it a try. I did make it my own though to include some gut-health goodness as well.

THE RECIPE:
½ a can of kombucha
½ a cup of tart cherry juice (I love the Whole Foods Organic 365 brand)
Ice
Squeeze of lime

🧪 The science behind the drink
Research shows that tart cherry juice increases sleep time and sleep efficiency because it increases the bioavailability of tryptophan and increases your body’s production of melatonin.
The Kombucha adds a good fizz to the drink, and the probiotics it contains can contribute to optimal gut health

Cheers 🥂 lmk if you try! 🍒
✨ @oxygenetix oxygenating concealer 🪄 I had ✨ @oxygenetix oxygenating concealer 🪄

I had to share this concealer with you because it has been an absolute favorite for about a year now. While everyone is talking about more mainstream brands – this one deserves all.the.applause. 👏🏼 It’s clean AND it works. Like really works to cover dark circles, redness, etc. It also promotes oxygen absorption which = hydration. So it’s basically like skincare IN a makeup product. The icing on the cake is that it doesn’t cake or settle in to fine lines, making it fabulous for mature skin.
I use a blend of shades 1.0 and 2.0 under my eyes and on my lids as a primer and let me tell you, it’s FLAWLESS 🪄

Our favorite non-toxic toddler products 🧴 🪄 Our favorite non-toxic toddler products 🧴 🪄

@livinglibationsofficial Jai Baby Joy Moisturizing Massage Oil’s description is on point: infuses your baby’s skin with Fresh-infused Vanilla beans dipped in Coconut crème joined with jubilant Jojoba create a moisturizing elixir. We’ve loved this oil since Z was a baby and find that it hydrates her skin so nicely after bathtime. Plus the smell is intoxicating! No fake fragrances or additives. 🥥

Life-flo Pure Magnesium Spray: Magnesium is calming and we use this spray with the Baby Jai Oil at night and find that it really helps to wind down and with sleep. 👼🏻

@juicebeauty Sport Sunscreen: this one is not targeted for children, but after 6 months of age, babies/kids can wear sunscreen and we opted to apply this one as it has the same ingredients (20% zinc) as baby mineral sunscreen.

@kudostobaby diapers: We’ve quickly become diaper connoisseurs and our favorite by far are Kudos because they’re 100% cotton AND disposable. Kudos contains no lotions, fragrances, chlorine, phthalates, or latex. LOVE. If you want to give them a try for yourself, you can take $$ off your order with code LYNN10

@boka Space Paste (Orange Cream) toothpaste is a nod to NASA’s invention of nano-hydroxyapatite (nHa). Boka trades fluoride for n-Ha which was a must when we were looking for a clean toddler toothpaste. Plus, it’s 100% biocompatible and non-toxic. Z always asks for more!

retinol was an ingredient that I stopped using whe retinol was an ingredient that I stopped using when I was pregnant & still avoid as I am breastfeeding. as a side note, many traditional skincare products containing retinol also come with parabens which can negatively affect your health.

so I set out to research products & ingredients that’d have a similar effect that are safe for pregnancy/breastfeeding and also clean. I found MOON JUICE from @herbivorebotanicals which is a plant-based, retinol-alternative serum containing 1% bakuchiol.

Bakuchiol has all of retinol’s benefits, but you won’t experience redness, dry skin, burning etc and as someone with sensitive skin, I can vouch for that. after using it for a month, I can see it working ✨ link to the exact product is in my skincare highlight 💖
✨AT HOME LASH EXTENSIONS✨ When it comes to eye ✨AT HOME LASH EXTENSIONS✨
When it comes to eyelashes, I sadly didn’t win luscious ones in the gene pool.
I love long, thick & fluttery lashes and I’ve tried everything from strip lashes to salon extensions to lash serums. All of the above damaged my natural lashes.

But then I started hearing some great things about @lashify DIY lash extension system. I was excited to try it, but honestly a little skeptical. But I’m SO glad I did because the results are game-changing. My lashes have never looked better!

The lashes (gossamers, the term lashify uses) I am wearing here are the chocolate stardust style in lengths 12 and 14 (two 12’s on the inner eye and two 14’s on the outer eye area). If you’re wanting a more natural looking lash, the chocolate color is sooo good. It’s a dark brown that will make your eyes pop but won’t give you that stark contrast that black does.

Lashify’s DIY lash extension system is not like salon extensions or glue-on strip lashes. The gossamers are applied to the underside of your natural lashes for a seamless look. AND Lashify's formulas are ophthalmologist-tested, hypoallergenic and free of irritants, such as formaldehydes, cyanoacrylates and latex.
It takes me about 10 mins start to finish for both eyes.

These stay on for daysss and make life so much easier & of course more glam 💖
