How you look on the outside reflects how you feel on the inside. In my experience, a disheveled appearance is the result of a carless attitude, and vice versa. I’m writing this today because I have been in a rut and it is time to reinvent my style. This can be quite the daunting and expensive task, so I’m going to share my top tips for reinventing your style in little and very large ways.
People treat you according to how you present yourself, so think about how you want to represent your personality!
Tip #1: Figure out who your style icon(s) is and play in your own closet
Start your wardrobe reinvention session by thinking about celebrities, models, or someone you may know in real life whose style you love. When I discover someone’s style whom I love, I usually take to Pinterest and pin away to keep a record of different outfit ideas. Your style board will probably tell you what key pieces you’ll need, as well as what direction to go in, whether it’s a classic, glam, rocker etc. look. I always stay true to myself as well and seek inspiration within my own closet and think about new and interesting ways that I can wear items. My favorite way to do this is to pick out one item at a time that you love, and challenge yourself to create as many outfits as you can with it. A great way to style looks in your closet is to play on themes. Mixed textures, combining different lengths, going with sleek and architectural, combining volume, etc. can all breathe life into your existing wardrobe. I promise you will come up with new combinations you never thought of before!
Tip #2: Find brands and stores that fit with your aesthetic and budget
It’s disappointing to discover that you have expensive taste…in my case…very expensive taste. Luckily, there are more and more retailers that carry beautiful clothes that are well made at fairly inexpensive prices. Knowing what you can spend on your new wardrobe per month will help determine where you can shop. My favorite style-forward and budget friendly stores:
Tip #3: Make a list of what you need to fit with your new style and rank by importance
This has been probably the most important step in the process for me. My mind is always swirling with things that I want, but listing them out in an order of priority helps to, well, prioritize your purchases and keep your budget in check. I suggest starting with staple pieces and basics if you are lacking those in your wardrobe and building from there.
Tip #4: Accessorize!
My favorite way to really personalize any look to make it mine is by adding accessories to every ensemble. Accessories really help to exude personality in an otherwise boring outfit. This is a great time to think outside of the box and experiment with colors and trends that you haven’t tried before. Think: bright pops of color or a different color metal than you usually wear, a bold scarf, or a vintage pin.
Tip #5: Change up your makeup routine
The best way to do this is by playing up your favorite facial feature. For me, it’s my eyes – so something as simple as popping on false lashes everyday makes a HUGE difference in my appearance as well as the way that I feel. They make me look so much more awake and just complete, plus they add that bombshell vibe which I just really love. Yes, I work out in lashes. I DGAF.
Tip #6: Change your hairstyle
Nothing can give your face a new lease on life like changing your hair! So many people, myself included – get stuck in a rut. Step outside of the box and add face framing layers, go for a collarbone length bob, or add highlights or lowlights to best bring out your eyes and skin tone. If you’re not sure which color(s) to try, ask your stylist! This is where I will be making the most drastic change come next week. Stay tuned!
