Let’s talk about shaving. Your legs, your flower, your armpits, all of it. I’ll be honest: Sometimes I am too lazy to shave – especially during the colder months. Maybe because I am so freaking hairy that the thought is just daunting…no, really though. Being half Jewish is the reason I (think) am so hairy. That’s more than you wanted to know, I know. My sister saw my hairy legs recently and was so disgusted with me. She told me that she shaves every time she showers, keeping the hair manageable. What a novel idea, I thought! Instead of letting my hair grow all over and having to basically weed-whack it down after a week, I took her advice.
As a side note, I have never been a wax or laser gal. Neither are for me. Too much maintenance! And pain. After I decided to give myself a brazilian several years ago and sat in my bathtub in pure agony wondering how I was going to ever get all of the wax off (it stayed on me for literally 3 days because I could not find it in me to pull it off), I told myself never again with body waxing. I am a one and done type of person, just get it over with in 10 minutes.
These are my tips for keeping your legs, bikini area, and armpits smooth and stubble free year-round:
+ Wash your hair, face, and other body parts before you start to shave. Warming the skin by being in the shower for 5-10 minutes before shaving is important.
+ When shaving your legs, shave up. Any other direction and you’re at risk for getting ingrown hairs.
+ When shaving your bikini area, use downward strokes in the direction of the hair growth to remove hair.
+ Use a razor that has at least two blades and does NOT have a moisture strip. Moisture strips contain all kinds of nasty chemicals that irritate your hair follicles and skin, resulting in ingrown hairs and bumps. I use these razors from BIC. I prefer to use disposable men’s razors because they are less frou-frou AKA usually no moisture strip and have more blades than women’s razors.
+ Use coconut oil as shaving cream. It’s all natural, has antibacterial properties making it less risky to get ingrown hairs, and it leaves your legs and flower area so silk smooth afterward.
+ Shave your entire legs. There’s nothing I can’t stand more than a shaved lower leg and a hairy thigh. Yes, even if your hair is blonde.
+ Apply coconut oil to your bikini area after shaving to further prevent ingrown hairs.
